What is Segment Challenge?
Segment Challenge allows you to host your own Strava challenges.
A challenge comprises one or more stages. You can create a segment challenge – based around different Strava segments – or an activity challenge where you decide what type of activity to record – distance, duration, or elevation – and can set an optional goal.
How much does Segment Challenge cost?
The site is completely free to use. There's no cost involved with hosting your own challenge.
Do I need a Strava account?
Yes, you need a Strava account to authenticate with Segment Challenge and to track your activity. A free Strava account is fine.
How do I host a challenge?
You need to choose between a segment challenge or an activity challenge and follow the steps on the host you own Strava challenge page.
How do I promote my challenge and invite people to join?
Once you've created your challenge you can invite athletes to participate by sharing the link to your challenge by selecting Share challenge from the challenge context menu, or by copying the browser address bar on the challenge page.
Segment Challenge doesn't yet provide a facility to promote your challenge, but you can share the link with your club members by creating a post on the club's Strava page, emailing your club's members, posting to social media, or on your own website.
Participants will need to click the "Join challenge" button on the challenge page which will prompt them to authorise Segment Challenge with Strava to allow access to their activity data. Once joined their activity will be automatically tracked and included in the leaderboards.
When are challenge leaderboards updated?
Stage leaderboards are updated hourly with activity data fetched from Strava while the stage is active. The leaderboards are live while the stage is in progress.
Challenge leaderboards are updated at the end of each stage. So a challenge with a single stage won't have its overall challenge leaderboards updated until the stage ends — usually at the end of the challenge.
Why can't I see my challenge in Strava?
Unfortunately challenges created on Segment Challenge do not appear on Strava. Strava doesn't provide any means of including third party challenges, such as those created on this site. Strava challenges are separate from any you create on this site.
Does Segment Challenge support virtual races?
Not yet, but it's a feature in the pipeline.
How can I brand my own challenge?
Please get in touch if you'd like to discuss custom branding for your challenge.
